Planning for Safety
Keep a bag packed and hidden in which you have copies of important papers (passports, birth certificates, checkbooks, prescriptions), extra keys, money, clothes, etc.
Identify neighbors or friends who can hide you or call 911 when you need help.
Think of a safe place to go if an argument occurs.
Avoid rooms without exits such as a bathroom, or rooms with weapons such as a kitchen.
If violence is unavoidable, make yourself smaller. Curl up into a ball in a corner with your face protected and your arms around each side of your head, fingers entwined.
Don’t run to where your children are, or they may become targets.
Talk with your children about safety measures. Tell them not to get involved in the violence between you and your partner. Plan a code word that will signal them when to get help or when to leave the house. Have a list of safe people for you or your children to contact.
Instruct children how to call emergency numbers and have them memorized, if possible. Know where the nearest pay phone is located.
Practice how to get out safely. Practice with the children.
Back the car in the driveway. Keep gas tank full, and all doors, except for driver’s door, locked.
Keep your purse and keys where you can find them. Have a picture of the abuser in your purse in case you are threatened by him at work or in public.
Try not to wear scarves or long jewelry that could be used for strangulation.
Try to document in a journal that is well hidden all violent incidences, noting dates, events and threats made.
Have your doctor document injuries in your file to have evidence in case you need an order of
protection.
Keep plenty of gas in your automobile.
Know where police stations are located in any area you frequent.
