Decentralized Childcare
Childcare/Child Development
The YWCA’s Before and After School Programs, located in 18 of the Memphis City and Shelby County Elementary and Middle Schools, provide safe and affordable quality care for children ages 5 through 14. Each day the students are given nutritious snacks, then spend quiet time doing their homework with assistance from fellow students and our well-trained staff. The students are then allowed to participate in a number of recreational and educational activities both inside and outside. On occasion, the students will have guest speakers on topics ranging from nutrition and health to future occupations. Our goal is to get the students to start thinking about how they can better their future starting now. We want them to feel safe and secure knowing that our staff is there for them if they have questions about school or life. We believe we can improve our society on a local level through increasing the students’ understanding of diversity, leadership and self-respect by creating an environment of empowerment.
- In the America After 3PM Survey, researchers reported that 14.3 million children return home to empty houses after school. In working families - those where both parents or a single parent hold a job - nearly one in three children are looking after themselves.
- According to Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, juvenile crime triples during the hours between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Youth in after-school programs are 50% less likely to smoke, drink or use drugs.
The YWCA Before and After School Programs provide a natural platform for kids to be physically active, explore arts and music, and address the most pressing concerns facing our young people today. In our programs, youth can develop new skills and talents, develop friendships and get help with tough subjects from our homework advisors. Plus parents can be more productive knowing that their children are in a caring and safe environment while they cannot be with them.
