The YWCA Training and Development Center of Greater Memphis is a job skill training and development  facility dedicated to students desiring to receive a 10 week certificate of completion in: Computer Repair, Preparatory/Pre-apprenticeship High Voltage Electricity, Low Voltage Electricity, Carpentry, Pluming, Warehouse/Logistics, and Computer Literacy.

The Training and Development Center is located in a one story 4000 square foot multi-purpose building with several classroom areas, with an auditorium, making the Center wheelchair accessible.  Additionally,  the Center has a computer learning lab with internet access and a computer repair lab.  The facility also includes free parking and public transportation is in walking distance.

JOB SKILLS TRAINING

Carpentry
The Carpentry Trades Program is a ten-week hands-on class in residential construction and home improvement. During the training, participants receive work experience that will prepare them for the construction trades.

Classes meet 2 days a week 3 1/2 hours a day at, the YWCA Training and Development Center, located 1044 Mississippi, Memphis.  Call (901) 948-0493 for an enrollment application and the current class schedule.

Preparatory/Pre-Apprenticeship High Voltage
The goal of this program is to produce highly competent students who will be able to pass requirements needed to enter the High Voltage Apprenticeship in a minimal amount of time and at a reasonable cost. The program offers core skills training to meet the diverse needs of the Apprenticeship High Voltage classes.

The program is available for anyone wishing to pursue a career in high voltage wiring. This intensive 10 week course is designed to provide entry level electrical skills for students with the background, knowledge and basic skills needed to function effectively on the job. At the end of this comprehensive course, each learner will be able to enter the Pre-Apprenticeship High Voltage Certification program.

Warehouse Logistics

This course provides students with an introduction to the basic operations of logistics warehouses and distribution centers. This course will cover operating functions such as storage and location processes, stock movement and placement systems, processes for bringing products into an operation, dissemination products, and properly recording those processes will be emphasized. The students will demonstrate competencies related to warehouse and distribution operations by completing hands-on experiences in a warehouse/distribution center simulation area and by using various associated technologies.  This course will also cover Logistics product support; product development, creation, distribution; and “after market” logistics.  Students will examine methods used to streamline and control the flow of human resources and cargo through the value adding process and complete activities involved in moving products, services and information from point of origin to point of use.

*The Tennessee Higher Education Commission  http://www.state.tn.us/thec/ authorizes these classes at The YWCA of Greater Memphis. This authorization must be renewed each year and is based on an evaluation by minimum standards concerning quality of education, ethical and business practices, health and safety and fiscal responsibility.

 

PLUMBING

 

This course includes, safety, the various tools, plumbing math, how to read drawings, plumbing materials (plastic, copper, iron, steel fittings, fixtures and installation).

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

Computer Repair
The goal of this program is to produce highly competent computer repair technicians in a minimal amount of time and at a reasonable cost. This program offers core skills training to meet the diverse needs of the technology industry.

This program is designed for individuals who have none to limited knowledge of  computer repair, but desire to become a computer technician. Computer operations, repair techniques and preparation for the A+ Certification will be learned. The course provides ten weeks of intensive hands-on training that will prepare participants to become employed in the high-tech computer industry.

Computer Literacy
The purpose of the computer literacy class is to expose the individual who has never used a computer to the basic operations. These basics include: turning a computer on and off, using a mouse, computer vocabulary, opening and saving files, basics of using the Internet, Microsoft Word , Excel, and Power Point.

Low Voltage Network Cabling Technician*
Learners gain hands-on knowledge and ability to successfully conduct site surveys, pull wire/cable and terminate and test copper to the highest level of specification (currently Category 6). The program offers core skills training to meet the diverse needs of the telecommunications cabling industry.

This course leads to certification of skills as a Low Voltage Cabling Technician. This intensive twelve-week course is designed to provide entry level telecommunications cabling installers with the background, knowledge and basic skills needed to function effectively on the job. At the end of the comprehensive course, each learner can work as a Low Voltage Cabling Technician.

Classes meet for six weeks, Monday through Thursday 9am to 12pm at the YWCA Training and Devlopment Center, located 1044 Mississippi, Memphis, TN. Call (901) 948-0493 for an enrollment application and the current class schedule.

Transfer of Credits, and Grievance Procedure

Transfer of Credits
Credits earned at The YWCA of Greater Memphis may not transfer to another educational institution. Credits earned at another institution may not transfer to The YWCA of Greater Memphis. It is highly recommended and you are advised to make certain that you know the transfer of credit policy of the YWCA and that of any other educational institutions you may in the future want to transfer the credits earned at the YWCA before you execute an enrollment contract or agreement.

Grievance Procedure
Any complaints regarding The YWCA of Greater Memphis or the Training and Development Center may appeal to the Executive Director, located 766 S.
